Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the arts. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma, and later directed an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house that belonged to a member on the jury. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a new publicist at a studio. From this position she started her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
